Frequently asked questions
Still got a few questions about what we do GUITJAMz? Don't be shy. Get in touch with us- GUITJAMz is here to help you learn how to play the guitar. Here's some of the common questions that come our way!
Why is my first guitar lesson free?
I think it's important you are convinced that GUITJAMz can help you reach your goals before spend hard earned money with us each week. You'll see how much fun you will have first before you book in to see us every week. You probably wouldn't buy a car you haven't test driven before right? We at Guitjamz sure wouldn't! We all love the guitar here and love to see new faces .
We get to meet, have a great chat about music and what you hope to achieve out of your lessons, we then take some time to establish where you are up to in your playing (as some people come and see us having played previously) and then we come up with a class where you'll fit best to skyrocket your playing. We then of course advise you of things you’ll need to start your lessons with us (guitar, picks, learning material etc) It’s the perfect way to start your lessons off on the right foot!

I have never played before/played for 5 years. Does this matter?
Everybody is welcome to in our studio. Depending on your playing history, age and skill level, we'll place you either in 1on1 guitar lessons or one of our group guitar classes. A student who has played for 5 years will have some development in their musicianship and may have something very specific that they need out of their lessons. A beginner student will obviously be starting their journey. This is all taken into account with your free meet and greet with us.

I think I may be too young/old for guitar

In my experience, age is no barrier in being able to enjoy playing great music. A good attitude understanding the value of practice, persistence and commitment is what is truly required. This can be understood by people of any age. While its easier for more mature people to think they are “past it”, we’ve seen it time and time again where rate of learning is not all that different across generations with students who have a great attitude towards their playing. Our classes are suited best for those 7 years and above!
How long will it take me to be able to play *that song*?

Your rate of progression, is entirely up to you. Your guitar lesson each week is geared towards progressing you as quickly as possible. It's also important to take into account the difficulty level of *that song* and where a musician’s current ability is at. So whether a song takes a couple of weeks or a couple of months, once you apply a strong practice schedule, you will figure out the answer to that question yourself as I help you along the way!

Why spend money on guitar lessons when there's many free lessons on Youtube and the net?

We live in an age of information true, but also we live in an age of misinformation. Unfortunately, there are many lessons on the net and Youtube that exist primarily to serve as clickbait for views or subscribers rather than give you a structured lesson with step by step guidance and to be frank with you, the problem is getting worse and it's not designed to really make you a better guitarist. There's no feedback on your playing either (and that goes for whatever online course a youtube channel is offering) which means there's a danger of developing bad techniques and a lack of understanding over the material. And while you may just come across a gem of a video that helps you with a problem, the odds are stacked against you. What a waste of your precious time.

Time can be better spent with a guitar teacher who knows their stuff So, lessons at GUITJAMz, there's no misinformation, there's feedback during your lesson time and also during the week where you can upload a short video of your practice session to see if you are on the right track. We uncover the theory in depth so that we have proper understanding of what we are covering and there's no need to shorten the length of the lesson to keep subscriber counts, viewership and drive traffic to a youtube channel! (All that stuff we at Guitjamz aren't really interested in)

Will I need to practice?
It’s not too different from a person saying they want to get fit and asking “Do I need to exercise?”. It doesn't matter who you are and where you are up to in your musical journey. The answer is absolutely! That is, if you want to get better at playing guitar of course. But it’s not as difficult as some people may think. As we continue to live in fast paced society with limited time on our hands, we will discuss ways to effectively use the time you have to practice well.

Group lessons or 1on1 lessons. Which one is right for me?
During your free guitar lesson, we'll evaluate your personality, where you are up to in your musical journey and your goals for lessons and make a recommendation. In my experience and studies with conclusive research, a guitar class in a group setting is effective for 95% of our students coming to us. This is because there is a higher level of interactivity when you get more enthusiastic people in a room, this promotes a more fun environment and pushes students to bring their best. Our group guitar classes retain the personalized touch of 1on1 by giving feedback during the lesson, but we also offer the opportunity for students to upload a short video of their practice that is viewed and then replied via email, to help students keep their practice on the right track. 1on1 instruction can be helpful for students with certain learning conditions or those that feel more comfortable in smaller environments.
